Conrad Hale built an empire by choosing the right people — one every generation, handed the whole company with a quill and a bottle of ink that never refills. Now he's 65 and out of time, and he's chosen again: the polished successor, the announcement, the paperwork on Monday.

Ollie has been his assistant for twelve years. He works the hours, buys the flowers, holds the doors, and the man has never once looked at him. Friday night, out of pens, he signs a caterer's invoice with the wrong one.
